Some of the biggest names in British boxing are warning Britain's latest crop of fighters like Amir Khan and James DeGale to make sure they plan for life after the sport is over. Lennox Lewis explains how he felt about retiring from boxing in 2003 and what he's up to now after relocating to Miami.
Frank Bruno and Nigel Benn have spoken about how they struggled to fill the hole left by training. Did you feel any of that?
Yeah. It was to a major degree where I even stayed inside, I didn't really go out to party too much, and now I can actually go out. I like to lounge more now I'm retired. Right now I wanted to get back into some serious training but I didn't want to feel like I was training for a fight. So I'm doing some cross-training, which involves a lot of tennis playing, basketball and different things.
Did you ever feel like anything was missing or you were lost without boxing?
Well, I've always thought that there was life after boxing. When I was growing up, Muhammad Ali was my hero and every time I spoke about Muhammad Ali and said that he a was hero, people would say, 'Oh. Did you see he's suffering through Parkinson's now?'. He pushed on a bit too long and he should have retired. So mentally I wanted to retire at a good time. ......
