Vitali Klitschko defended WBC title against Juan Carlos Gomez

“I am so happy to have won the fight. Juan was much stronger than I expected”, Klitschko stated after the title bout. The fight was stopped by referee Daniel van de Wiele (Begium) at 1:29 min in round 9 when Gomez was in the ropes without defending himself anymore.

“Today, I lost against the strongest man on the planet”, said Gomez afterwards about Klitschko. The Champion was already looking into the future and his next fight. “The Klitschko brothers also want to have the WBA title. I want to fight Nikolai Valuev.“ Brother Wladimir Klitschko is reigning IBF, WBO and IBO Champion. The fight is not possible until Valuev meets and wins his next obligation, a mandatory rematch with unbeaten Ruslan Chagaev.

An amazing total of 11.5 million television viewers watched the championship on German TV channel RTL, which was a market share of 55 percent – the best German TV figures in 2009. The Klitschko-Gomez world title tilt was broadcast in more than 100 countries worldwide, including on ESPN Classic live, and replayed on ESPN2 in the United States.
