September 25th in Cologne, Wladimir came face-to-face with German Axel Schulz for the vacant European Heavyweight title, a fight which Klitschko dominated throughout. It was finally over when he knocked out Schulz out for the first time, 18 seconds prior to the end of the eighth round. "I knew that Axel would end his career if he looses. He was over thirty, while I was twenty-four with one defeat. One more loss for me at this point would have ended my career, and I did not want that. I prepared for this fight like never before. Schulz lost and retired, I won and stayed."
